Local Flair

24 Hours

We had one night away in downtown Austin and it was one of our favorites...worth sharing.

We opted for an early lunch at Phoebe's Diner downtown, the cutest and tastiest choice around. They're known for their tater tots, so we had some for sure. It was the perfect place to begin our 24 hours of fun.

Frances Modern Inn on 11th street in downtown Austin was where we booked our stay, and we arrived downtown around noonish, planning to shop and stroll before check-in. However, our room was ready and the inn was so nice to let us come on in!

Let me tell you about the inn. It's luxurious, and right outside our room was a very cool patio with a little heater, sofa, coffee bar, etc. .and on the rooftop was another patio. There are under 20 rooms in this boutique hotel, with a restaurant on the bottom floor, Poeta (we made reservations for dinner.)

After we checked in, we decided to stroll 11th street and its shops and sights. There were several cute stores, a favorite being Take Heart. Some are a bit pricey, but there were still sales and so much fun to see and enjoy, along with a big mural. There's a Quickie Pickie store just across the street from the inn and we stopped in there to purchase a couple of breakfast items for the following morning. It was so fun to walk everywhere, hand in hand, and visit something other than Target and Walmart, as these small stores were totally unique. There was a bookstore/coffee shop Vintage Bookstore and Wine Bar where we sat and lingered for a while and will definitely go back! And we saw one of Austin's original moon towers as we strolled, too.

Back to our room to enjoy and rest, we did. We had brought dress-up clothes for dinner (why not?). We got all fancied up and walked down to Poeta for a most romantic and delicious dinner for two. Every detail was perfect, and we want to go back with friends. We loved the food and the service and the atmosphere.

We wanted to enjoy our room so we spent the rest of the night there and watched a show and looked out the window, and enjoyed our stay.

The next morning was cold, but not too cold for our breakfast on the patio and Jon really enjoyed the coffee bar. There were blankets provided, and the little fireplace heater was on. Perfect~

We spent the next hour inside our room putting together a small puzzle we had purchased at World Market at the after-Christmas sale - it was 75 pieces and so fun.

After we checked out, we drove to enjoy lunch back up in North Austin, on our way home, and said over and over again - that was simply the best 24 hours away...yet close...ever.
