Two Texas Towns

We visited these towns on separate days but they could easily have been visited all in one. So that's why I've combined Kingsbury and Luling as the stops for this road trip. Just one hour away...on 130 out of Austin, away from 35.

Kingsbury is a tiny spot in the road, but twice a year they have a big festival and show. However, you could visit there any time and enter the general store to look around and grab a breakfast taco from the warmer in the back, to get your day started. Head down the road to the Pioneer Flight Museum - well worth the stop and the little store too - but especially if the big show is happening. It happens in the fall and late spring.

When you're hungry for lunch, drive back to the tiny strip and eat on the patio at the Big Easy - try the catfish or a burger - and the fried pickles. It will be smoky inside so eat outside, and encounter the friendliest people! If there's a market going on, visit the booths, and buy something.

Now, head to Luling. Or you could have stopped here first and then on to Kingsbury second. Two restaurants of interest are the Mexican cafe for a huge breakfast, or the BBQ place there for ambience and good food, too. We loved both!

There's a tiny park you can walk around, and there's a lavender farm/field that's gorgeous when in bloom, or worth a visit when it's not. We loved the huge store there and the lavender ice cream - and the pretty purples all around.

If you want to shop a bit, there's an antique store just off the square where I scored a red leather jacket that looked like it had never been worn! There's also a place on the corner of the square where everyone stops in for something cool to take home for your kitchen, and...fresh delicious ice cream to enjoy in one of the rockers just outside the store. There's a clock museum that's cool to visit, as well.

And you mustn't forget the fruit/produce market where you can often just leave your payment and take your goodies. It's not to be missed!

Luling smells like oil, but don't let that deter you. And you might miss Kingsbury if you drive by too fast, so slow down.

Small town Texas at its finest, all on a Saturday road trip, any time of the year.
